Mariners split doubleheader with Bucs

POLSON - The Mission Valley Mariners and the visiting Bitterroot Bucs split an evening filled with offensive firepower. The two teams scored 27 total runs and split the games one apiece on Wednesday, June 22.

Mariners got the scoring started by putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning.

The Bucs responded with five runs in the top of the second and the Bucs bats continued to roll in the top of the fourth finishing the inning with four runs and a 9-2 lead.

The Mariners added five runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to pull within one run 9-8.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mariners orchestrated an impressive seventh inning comeback. The Mariners loaded the bases with no outs. Mariner slugger Espn Fisher hit a bases loaded two-run single into left field pushing base runners Xavier Fisher and Alex Muzquiz across the plate giving the Mariners the 10-9 victory.

Espn Fisher led the Mariners at the plate going 3-of-4 and five RBIs.

In the night-cap the Bucs prevailed over the Mariners 6-2, the Bucs’ pitching staff held the Mariners’ bats in check allowing only two runs on four hits.

On Thursday, the Mariners hit the road and went to battle in the four-day, eight team Big Bucks Tournament hosted at the Lumber Yard Fields in Libby.

The Mariners opened the tourney with a 16-2 rout over the North Idaho Lakers.

Dawson DuMont cleared the bases in the second inning with a grand slam home run. Also for the Mariners, Wyatt Wadsworth booked a home run in the fourth inning.

In Friday’s 14-5 win over the Northern Lake Mountaineers, DuMont hit home runs in the second and seventh innings.

In a doubleheader on Saturday, Muzquiz’s fourth-inning home run helped lead the Mariners to an 8-5 win over the Claremont Cardinals, however in the second game of the twin bill the Cardinals shut out the Mariners 3-0.

The Mariners wrapped up the tournament on Sunday with a 7-1 victory over Latah Generals.

On the mound for the Mariners, Xavier Fisher picked up the win going the distance allowing one run on five hits, striking out seven and walking one.

The Mariners finished the tournament with an overall record of 4-1.
