CSKT preparing for return of Arlee powwow
PABLO — The Tribal Council of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes recently voiced support for the Arlee Powwow Celebration Committee's decision to move forward with planning and preparations for the 2022 Arlee Powwow Celebration.
"In previous discussions, it has always been this council's decision to follow the recommendations of the powwow committees; we support your decisions," said Elmo District Councilman Len TwoTeeth. "It's been too long, and it'll be nice to see everyone get back together. We stand by you, and we must do everything in our power to keep it safe."
"I am absolutely excited, and I certainly support having a powwow," Chairman Tom McDonald said.
"One of the things we would have to fall back on is our public health servants and recommendations," McDonald said. "Given what is going on in the county, state, and region, everybody is lifting all their requirements, so it is pretty safe to say we will follow in those footsteps. A great time to start planning for it and let’s get it going.”
Arlee Powwow Committee member Ron Matt said that there are many people who believe there is a need for a powwow and are eager to assist if they can, which is a big plus for the Arlee Committee because they currently have a small group.
"We need a powwow here, and I'm glad it's being considered; just be careful how you do it," Arlee District Councilman Jim Malatare said.
"We ensure that whatever the CDC guidelines are, we will continue to follow those guidelines and ensure that everyone who comes follows those guidelines," said Arlee Powwow Celebration Committee member Norrie DustyBull.
The council voted unanimously to increase Arlee and Elmo powwow celebration budgets to $60,000.
"Maintenance issues have been going on for some time now," TwoTeeth said. "I don't want powwow committees to use their annual allocation to pay for maintenance."
According to TwoTeeth, Tribes have an obligation to ensure that powwow grounds are healthy and safe for the public. "Council will address it and ensure that issues are being followed up on,” he said.
The powwow has been canceled the last two years. This will be the first year for the current Arlee Powwow Celebration Committee to plan and organize the 2022 Arlee Celebration.
