Polson’s Newman part of U19 hockey championship

Polson High School student/athlete Summer Newman helped her hockey team, the Flathead Lady Fusion, fend off six other teams to claim the 19U state title Feb. 25-27 at the Havre Ice Dome.
Newman, a freshman goalie, saved 24 of 26 shots in the championship game against a squad from Bozeman to lead the Lady Fusion to a 3-2 overtime victory and the title.
Teams from Bozeman, Butte, Havre, Missoula, Glasgow and Salmon, Idaho, also competed in the tournament, which was hosted by the Treasure State League of the Montana Amateur Hockey Association.
The Lady Fusion defeated Glasgow, 5-2, then finished in a 3-3 tie against Havre on Friday.
On Saturday, they defeated the Missoula Bruins, 6-2, with Neuman stopping 19 of 21 shots against. The win moved the Lady Fusion into the championship game.
