Polson wrestlers placed third in the large-team standings at the Little Guy Wrestling Western Montana Championships held at Linderman Gym over the weekend.

More than 500 wrestlers representing teams from all around western Montana attended, with competition in five age groups — Novice (age 9-10), Middle (11-12), Middle Girls (11-12), Junior (13-14) and Junior Girls (13-14). The event is the season finale for the region’s Little Guy Wrestling programs.

Competition in the Junior and Junior Girls groups took place Friday, followed by Novice, Middle and Middle Girls groups on Saturday.

Polson Little Guy Wrestling agreed to host the event just weeks before it was held, after groups in Hamilton and Kalispell backed out. The local event was put on by a team led by Polson Mayor and Pirates wrestling head coach Eric Huffine.

Main matches were held on four large mats that were placed on the gym floor. During preliminaries, two matches could be held on each mat with a maximum of eight matches taking place at any given time.

Despite the late notice, matches flowed well, with wait times held to a minimum, and the event wrapped up on time late Saturday afternoon.
