More than 60 people took part in a bike ride in Polson on April 25 to honor the memory of cyclist Ken Cornelius, who died tragically on March 28.

Cornelius was not only a cattleman and longtime Lake County Search and Rescue member, but he was also an avid sports enthusiast and outdoorsman. Riders of all ages and abilities participated in the event that attracted people from as far away as Helena and Spokane, a testament to the kind of spirit and enthusiasm Cornelius generated on a bike.

Ken died as a result of injuries he sustained from what can only be called a freak accident while racing in the 14th annual Speedwagon Classic Bicycle Race in Polson. His wife, Renae, also attended the event to see the riders off at the start and to talk with them afterward.

The repercussions of Ken's death will continue for a grieving local athletic community that will take much time to overcome. However, many knew the best way to celebrate Ken's life was to do the very activity he loved so much and that was cycling.
