Mariners win Loggertown Wood Bat Classic

The Mission Valley A Mariners captured the 2022 Loggertown Wood Bat Classic with a 5-3 victory over the Clark Fork Valley Riverdogs Sunday at Lee Gehring Field in Libby.

During top half of the fourth, the Mariners loaded the bases. With one out, Cole Wadsworth laced a laser liner into a gap between outfielders that held base clearing potential. But Missoula's Matty Herzog made a highlight reel defensive play, snared the ball on the run, then doubled up the runner at second for a double play to neutralize a potential big inning for the M's.

Trailing 5-4 entering the sixth inning, the Mariners erupted for five runs that included an opening double from leadoff Xavier Fisher, an RBI double from Alex Muzquiz that knotted the contest at five apiece, followed by an RBI single from Dawson DuMont that overtook the lead. Two more runs would score despite a swap of pitchers to quell the uprising.

The Mariners tacked on a trio of insurance runs in the top half of the final frame. Missoula would mount a rally in the bottom half of the seventh by loading the bases with nobody out. They would pare back the deficit by a pair, but the Mariners escaped by inducing fly outs to advance to the championship.
