Class A teams converge for Polson’s ABC meet

Ronan’s Payton Cates cleared six feet even to win the high jump and set a personal-best mark of 42 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump to claim a pair of individual titles at the Nelson-Thomas ABC track meet Saturday at Polson. Cates also set a personal-best mark in the discus to finish fourth.

No other Lake County athletes claimed individual titles.

Hamilton won the boys team title easily, finishing 34 points ahead of second-place Frenchtown. Whitefish claimed the girls team title, beating out second-place Corvallis by 13 points. Columbia Falls was third.

Eleven schools competed at the meet, all class A programs. It was a final tune-up for most before this weekend’s Western Divisional meet at Hamilton.

Cates’ teammate, Ted Coffman, finished fifth in the high jump with a mark of five feet, six inches.

The host-team Pirates got a fourth-place finish from junior Drifter Skillicorn in the 400 meters. Skillicorn also finished third in the long jump.

Polson’s Ethan McCauley was fifth in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 141 feet. He also finished ninth in a deep shot put field.

Ronan’s Adriana Tatukivei finished fourth in the girls 100 meters, and came in sixth in the 200 meters. Polson’s Michelle ale was sixth in the 100.

Olivia Heiner of Ronan finished third in the 1600 meters, just a few seconds ahead of Polson’s Ashtyn Wagner, who finished fourth. Polson’s Halle Heninger was fifth.

Polson senior Taleah Hernandez set a personal-best mark of 9 feet, six inches in the pole vault for a third-place finish.
