Lady Pirates slam their way through busy week

The Lady Pirates softball team went 4-1 last week to run their regular season record to 14-5 in a week peppered with grand slams.

Carli Maley hit a grand slam in the second inning against Kalispell Flathead on May 10. The visiting Bravettes responded in kind when their leadoff, Macy Craver, reciprocated with a slam of her own in the top half of the fifth. But the Lady Pirates plated a run in the bottom half of the frame to end the contest by 10-run mercy rule. Maley chalked up eight RBIs in the contest, plating another pair of runs when she reached on an error and closed out her plate appearances with a twin RBI single.

At the Laverne Combo tournament hosted by Butte Central, Polson played a pair of marquee matchups against Southeastern A teams Laurel and Billings Central, both of whom are anticipated to solidify berths at the upcoming State A tournament.

Against Laurel, the contest was knotted at two apiece until Lady Locomotive catcher Taylor Feller clocked a solo shot over the fence for the walk-off win. Had the contest been played under regulation parameters, Polson would have had another inning to craft their own counter.

Against undefeated Billings Central on Saturday, the Lady Pirates were plagued by a rash of fractured fielding flubs that deviated from their more typical finesse, contributing to a four run deficit after the first inning. After trailing by a half dozen, Polson bats finally started to go to work.

After picking up one in the bottom half of the second, the Lady Pirates were able to knot the contest at six apiece in the bottom half of the third, culminated by Katelyn Druyvestein's first ever grand slam. But thereafter, the Lady Rams would craft a counter to reacquire their margin of advantage, the contest ending after four with Polson trailing 7-11. Despite the losses, the Lady Pirate acquired valuable intel on two teams they could potentially face again during State A tournament action. The next time they meet, Polson will have more innings to work with. Polson won their bookend matches over the weekend by 10-run rule.
