Tennis Roundup: Polson’s Todd claims divisional title

Clara Todd of Polson bounced back after a terrible first set to defeat Anyah Cripe of Whitefish 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the girls singles championship match at the Northwest A tennis divisional Saturday at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell.

Todd, a member of Polson’s 2021 state champion girls team, will be the No. 1 seed from the Northwest at this weekend’s state tournament at Bozeman. She didn’t lose a set at Kalispell until the first set of the championship.

Polson’s Torrin Ellis will be the No. 2 seed at state. Ellis also coasted to the title match with straight-set victories, but Libby’s Ryan Beagle swept Ellis 7-6 (6-1), 6-0 in the championship.

Ronan’s Beau Decker also advanced in singles play. Decker lost his opening match against Highland Lee-French of Whitefish 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. He then won his next five matches in consolation play to finish third.

Dillon PrettyOnTop of Ronan won his first match, but fell to Ellis 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He won two more matches in consolation play but ultimately lost to Joe Brandt of Whitefish, who claimed the final spot to state.

Ronan’s girls doubles team of Aaliyah Decker and Alyssa PrettyOnTop went undefeated until the championship, where they lost 6-4, 6-4 to Emma Trieweiler and Tallory Workman of Whitefish. Decker and PrettyOnTop will be the Northwest No. 2 seed at state. The Ronan duo defeated Polson’s Camilla Foresti and Katie Smith 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the semifinals. Foresti/Smith finished third and also advanced to state as the No. 3 seed.

Polson’s other girls doubles team, Sierra Lundeen and Elizabeth Tolley, advanced to the semifinals, where they lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Emma Trieweiler and Tallory Workman of Whitefish. They then lost their next two matches in consolation play to come up just short of a trip to state.

The Polson boys doubles team of Trent Wilson and Owen McElwee nearly took the divisional crown, but lost 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in a tough championship match against Mason Kelch and Aaron Dicks of Whitefish. The Wilson/McElwee duo will be the Northwest No. 2 seed at state.

Championship: Mason Kelch/Aaron Dicks (WF) def. Trent Wilson/Owen McElwee (POL) 7-6 (7-1), 6-3; Third place: Cade Morgan/Cody Schweikert (CF) def. Finn Stagg/Jesse Burrough (WF) 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.

Girls singles

Championship: Clara Todd (POL) def. Anyah Cripe (WF) 0-6, 6-1, 6-3; Third place: Lauren Brown (WF) def. Cloey Ramage (CF) 6-1, 6-2.

Girls doubles

Championship: Emma Trieweiler/Tallory Workman (WF) def. Aaliyah Decker/Alyssa Pretty On Top (RON) 6-4, 6-4; Third place: Camilla Foresti/Katie Smith (POL) def. Elliette Haigh/Ashley Gunset (WF) 6-4, 6-1.

Mission duo finishes fourth at state

Mission girls doubles teammates Madyson Currie and Ahni Umphrey won five of seven matches to finish fourth at the class B/C state tennis tournament last weekend at Bozeman. The St. Ignatius duo won their first two matches before falling to Gio Horner and Ava Bellamah of Loyola Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals. Bellemah/Horner were undefeated going into the tournament, and they ran the table at Bozeman to claim the state title.

Currie/Umphrey then reeled off three more victories in consolation play. Their season ended with a loss in the 3rd/4th game to a duo from Fort Benton.

Also competing for Mission was Lanie Keast, who went 0-2 in girls singles play.

The boys duo of Kayden Carter and Tre-Heath LaFrombois swept their opening match with a second-set tiebreaker over a pair from Anaconda. They lost their next two matches and finished out of the hardware.

Missoula Loyola swept the boys and girls team titles. It was the third consecutive crown for the girls and second straight for the boys.

Loyola’s Evelyn Deschans won her third singles title. Ignacio Carrion of Great Falls Central won boys singles, and Central duo Eddie Dewart and Dillon Gray were the doubles champions.
