Bison Range investigates poached elk
An investigation was immediately opened by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes when a poached bull elk was found dumped in the canal on the Bison Range with its head cut off. All efforts are being made to find out any information concerning this case and all leads are actively being investigated.
“We cannot confirm at this time that this elk is the iconic non-typical elk known as ‘Harold,’ who has been widely admired by many Bison Range visitors annually,” according to a press release from Tribal Fish and Game. “Efforts have been made to locate Harold in one of his many typical hideout locations, and we have not been able to confirm his location.” The bull elk's antlers were a non-typical pattern, which could have made him a target.
Poaching is rare on the Bison Range, where hunting is prohibited. On average around four bull elk die annually, usually due to injuries sustained from rut or natural causes.
Those with information on the case are encouraged to contact Tribal Game Warden Garrett Fenton at 406-360-8193 or garrett.fenton@cskt.org.
