Terry Pitts to represent Dixon on Tribal Council
Lifelong Dixon resident Terry Pitts was sworn in as tribal councilman last Tuesday, Oct. 4. He takes the seat of Anita Matt, who died Aug. 22, and serves through the end of her term in 2026. Matt had represented the Dixon District since 2016.
According to the Char-Koosta News, Pitts taught in the Arlee School District for 25 years, and had served on the Tribal Council prior to Matt.
“It is mixed feelings, it’s sad,” he told the Char-Koosta. “Anita was not only a representative, but also, I had known her for years.”
He said he was planning to catch up on the issues facing the council and hoped to carry Matt’s projects forward. According to the newspaper, her aspirations for the community included improving streets, constructing a new basketball court and baseball field, and building an arbor for powwows and a new boat launch on the Flathead River.
Pitts also shares Matt’s passion for projects that support the farming and ranching community.
The councilman, who lives with his wife in Dixon, has two sons and nine grandchildren.
