SOFTBALL

Long-ball Polson defeats Libby

The Polson Lady Pirates had three different players hit a home run as they downed Northwestern A Conference foe Libby 13-3 on Friday, March 31, in Libby.

"Getting early season wins against Libby is extremely important because you really don't know the other team especially with a new coaching staff and we are extremely young as well," Polson Head Coach Jami Hanson said. "However, our coaching staff is tremendously excited with what we are seeing in the girls and the leadership and acceptance of their roles."

Libby was held to four hits as Samantha Rensvold went five innings and struck out six for the Lady Pirates, then Alyssa Orien locked the Lady Loggers out of the woods in relief.

"I felt that Samantha Rensvold and Alyssa Orien did a fabulous job keeping the Libby hitters in check and pitching to early contact in the count and relying on their defense to help them out," Hanson said. "Even though we had too many errors in the field, nonetheless they didn't hurt us too badly."

Polson had an 8-0 lead after two innings of play and added four more runs in the bottom of the third. The Lady Pirates finished with eight hits and overcame six errors in the game.

Caitlyn Ward led the way with three hits, while Kailey Smith had two. Ward, Smith, and Nikki Kendall each had home runs in the matchup.

"Some major highlights for the Libby game was definitely our ability to hit the ball consistently and with power and timely hits, base-running and offensive execution," Hanson said.

Kendall and Carli Maley each drove in three runs, while Tyneesha Brown and McKenna Hanson drove in two runs apiece.

Polson improved to 3-0 on the year in the matchup. Hanson wanted to give special thanks to everyone supporting the Lady Pirates Softball and those helping announce, keep the scorebook, and man concessions, as well as parents and fans.
