Landslide alert issued for Missions
The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes announced last week that recent landslides have occurred in the areas of McDonald Lake and Mission Reservoir.
“As you plan your outdoor activities, we want to remind you to prioritize safety and be aware of the potential risks associated with landslides,” said Stephanie Gillin, information and program director for the Division of Fish, Wildlife, Recreation and Conservation.
A CSKT press release warns that landslides can occur quickly and unexpectedly, especially in areas with steep slopes, burned areas, loose soil or heavy rainfall. Those planning outdoor recreation are encouraged to check the weather forecast and trail conditions before heading out, stick to designated trails and avoid walking on unstable slopes.
“If you notice any signs of instability, such as cracking, bulging, or unusual
movements in the ground or nearby trees, it is best to avoid the area altogether,” said Gillin.
“Remember, recreating in areas with possible landslides is at your own risk. Please take all necessary precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of others around you.”
