Polson Seniors: About those taxes

If you haven’t filed your IRS form 1040 EZ by the time you read this, it’s not too late to file for an extension. That EZ at the end is supposed to mean “Easy,” but it never is.

If you work a 40-hour work week for 52 weeks it figures out to a 2,080-hour work year. The IRS named the standard form 1040 for some reason. My guess is that if 1,040 is one half of 2,080 then you must work half a year just to pay your taxes.

Most people pay up without too much grumbling. The frustration comes with how the money is spent, or how some folks (other than you) do not pay their fair share. Ben Franklin said it best by observing there are only two things we can be sure of: death and taxes. My grand pappy said, “ifs ya wanna dance to da music, y’ gotta pay da fiddlah.”

If you need a place to hang out with your friends, consider our senior community hall. We are open from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays for small group meetings (advance notice recommended).

Activities at the Polson center, open to all, include: bowling for fun, 1 p.m. Tuesdays; bridge, 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays (beginners welcome); low-impact exercise, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; Tai Ji Quan – Moving for Better Balance, 10-11 a.m. Tuesdays and 1-2 p.m. Wednesdays (new people are welcome); pinochle, 12:30-3 p.m. Thursdays; bingo, 7 p.m. Fridays ($100 payout on blackouts), with playing card bingo on the first and third Wednesdays. The pool table is open 8 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays, and “board/card game night” is available Thursdays.

A veteran’s representative will visit the center from 10 a.m.-noon Friday, May 5, and Tuesday, May 16.

Meals are available for sit-down, take-out or delivery from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. weekdays and cost $5. The menu is posted each week at the center; call before 10 a.m. for deliveries.

Main dishes include: turkey pot pie, April 20; pork tips with gravy, April 21; creamy veggie soup, April 24; sweet and sour chicken, April 25; chef’s salad, April 26; chili dogs, April 27; and the birthday dinner, featuring baked ham, April 28.

The center is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays at 504 3rd Ave. E. For more information, call 406-883-4735 or email polsonseniorcenter@gmail.com.
