Mission Bulldogs best Plains in season opener
With all the frequent flyer miles the Mission football team put up during their Western 8-man opener on Friday, Aug. 25, they just might have to install a traffic control tower in town.
The Bulldogs defeated Plains 34-6 as quarterback Titan Mansell threw four touchdowns. Mission is coming off making the state final last year and hasn't lost to Plains since 2017.
The victory was also new head coach Jacen Petersen's first career win.
Mission found the endzone in the first quarter as Mansell threw a 25-yard touchdown to Iyezk Umphrey. Plains answered back with their own score to tie it up 6-6. Before halftime, the Bulldogs struck again in the air as Mansell hit Rhain Gonzalez for a five-yard touchdown pass.
After going into halftime with a 14-6 lead, Mission didn't let up on the air attack. In the third quarter, Mansell threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Iyzek Umphrey to make it 20-6 and then added a three-yard touchdown pass to Gonzalez in the fourth quarter.
Mission's scoring was capped off by a three-yard touchdown pass by Kelby Dumont to make the final score 34-6.
