More enlightenment, less judgment on abortion
Some thoughts after reading a letter to the editor in the Thursday, Nov. 30, edition from Gloria Mader Simon:
While I agree with Ms. Simon that an abortion law is unnecessary, I disagree with all the other statements in her letter. I hope that when I’m 80, after listening to 50-plus years of debate on the issue, I will have insight, education, and experiences that broaden my view, and hope that I would not offer such a trite, shortsighted, and ignorant premise that “the pill” is the answer to abortions.
I’m not sure who is telling her that only educated women are the ones protesting, inferring that abortion is just being used for birth control, but I can guess.
Ms. Simon completely ignores the fate of women who are happy to be pregnant but develop life-threatening complications, as well as young girls and women who are the victims of incest or rape and women who cannot afford, or are not allowed by their partners, to take birth control pills.
I hope to see far more enlightenment, less judgment, and more support for women making their own healthcare decisions.
