Time Capsule: Juveniles in trouble, new bridge, wrestling champs
Juveniles held here by police
Flathead Courier, Feb. 15, 1945
Two local youths are being held by authorities here following their apprehension in Portland recently, and action in their cases is pending.
It is alleged that the youths attempted to rob the Smoke House beer parlor some time ago and forced “Doc” Corrigan away from the scene of the crime at the point of a gun, after he had opened the establishment to commence the day’s business.
Police officers in Polson had notified the Portland authorities to watch for the two after obtaining information that they had headed for that city.
Council calls for bids on bridge water line replacement; ponders fate of cabin
Flathead Courier, Feb. 28, 1965
The Polson city council Monday night at its mid-month meeting called for bids for the replacement of the water line at the west end of the Polson bridge. The construction is made necessary by the forthcoming construction of a new span across the Flathead River. The contract for the new bridge will be let in Helena Feb. 25 by the state highway commission.
Determination of the fate of the old log cabin at the east end of the bridge – reputed to be the oldest building in Polson – was put off until the council’s March 1 meeting.
There has been considerable talk about disposing of the building because it is an “eye sore.” Other people regard it as an historic asset that someday will prove valuable in conjunction with a museum.
Pirates take state wrestling title
Lake County Leader, Feb. 16, 1995
A ton of heart beats nine seniors any old time.
Just ask Polson’s wrestlers. They rolled over a series of obstacles all season long to win the Class A state title last weekend in Billings. The final hurdle was an experienced Sidney squad, which led the team race 93-92.5 going into Saturday morning’s semi-finals.
Then wrestle-back wins by Kory Newgard at 119 and Mike Huffine at 125 worked “like magic” to get the team jacked, recalled assistant coach Dennis Johnson.
“That was the real spark for the whole team, said head coach Bob Owen. “As soon as that happened I knew we had a great chance.”
And that was about the time normally mellow Bill Owen, the team’s other assistant, “came out like a treed bobcat,” Bob said with a laugh at a packed victory rally Sunday afternoon.
