Hoop Stories: Polson & Charlo big winners

Polson takes down Libby

Polson won their third straight and kept pace in the competitive Northwest A, downing Libby 71-59 on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Jarrett Wilson was his typical stellar self, notching 34 points, while Trent Wilson had 16 points, and Espn Fisher notched 8.

Polson trailed 14-12 after the first quarter but knotted the game up at 31-31 for halftime. They outscored the Loggers by eight in the third quarter and added to their advantage by another four in the final stanza.

The win improved Polson to 4-1 in league play, good enough for third place in the Northwest A, separated by just one game in the top three spots. Polson also has scored the second-most amount of points in the conference.

Wilson leads Polson past Corvallis

Jarrett Wilson scored 35, and Espn Fisher notched another 14 as Polson picked up a Class A nonleague victory over Corvallis, 72-67, on Friday, Jan. 20.

After a slow start for both teams, the offenses picked up - with Polson's being slightly more powerful The Pirates led 28-25 and halftime and were able to score 44 points in the second half.

CLASS A GIRLS BASKETBALL

Polson winners of three straight

Polson currently sits in second place in the Northwest A Conference with a 39-27 victory over Libby on Saturday, Jan. 21.

It was a low-scoring affair as Polson trailed 16-14 at the break but went on a 12-7 run in the third and closed things out with a 13-4 surge. The Lady Pirate defense held the Lady Loggers to single digits every quarter. Julia Barnard led Polson with 14 points, while Mila Hawk had nine and Grace Simmonich scored eight. Nikki Kendall had three blocks in the matchup.

With the win, the Lady Pirates improved to 7-4 on the year and have won three in a row.

Polson handles Corvallis

Julia Barnard put up "Player of the Week" numbers, scoring a career-high 24 for the Lady Pirates as they trounced Corvallis 60-38 on Friday, Jan. 20, in nonleague play. Barnard hit four three-pointers, a two-pointer, and free throws for the total.

Polson's 25-point first quarter was the most in a single quarter for the Pirates over a decade. Polson delivered an armada of offense, leading 42-17 at halftime. While the second half was evenly played, the Lady Pirates' barrage had already done the damage.

Bigfork shows top pedigree against Mission

Mission is a very good boys basketball team, but Bigfork is showing they're among the state's elite with a 63-30 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday, Jan. 21. Despite 23 points by Zoran LaFrombois, Mission couldn't overcome a slow second and third quarter.

Bigfork had a 31-17 lead at halftime and finished the game in the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run. The Vikings had eight different players score.

Mission didn't lose much ground in the standings with the loss. They stayed in second at 5-2 in league play, with Thompson Falls and Eureka sitting at third and fourth. Bigfork improved to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in league play.

Arlee falls to Missoula Loyola

Missoula Loyola's offense got out to a hot start and didn't relent in a 73-36 Western 6B victory over Arlee on Friday, Jan. 20. Missoula Loyola led 36-18 at halftime.

Arlee ties up Deer Lodge

Arlee had a big first half en route to their 71-37 Western 6B league win over Deer Lodge on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The Warriors got a balanced attack as Kaiden Big Sam notched 19 points, Ben Old Person-Harlow scored 18 points, and Dallas Swab notched 15.

In all, nine different players scored for Arlee. The Warriors jumped out to an 18-3 lead in the first quarter and held Deer Lodge to just six points in the second stanza.

Bigfork defeats Mission

Bigfork, moving up to Class A soon due to soaring enrollment figures, handled Mission 68-31 in Western 7B play on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The Lady Valks jumped to a 38-17 halftime lead and clamped down on defense in the second half.

Mission was led by Kooper Page's 10 points and Kieran Incashola's 6. The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to third in league play with a 3-3 record and 7-3 overall.

Mission clamps down on Troy

Mission’s offense was hitting all cylinders while their defense clamped down hard in a 65-13 Western 7B victory over Troy on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Kooper Page led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points, while Cora Matt notched 12. Mission jumped out to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter and had the 47-9 advantage at the break. Mission shut out Troy in the third quarter and gave up just four points in the fourth.

Kason Page added 11 points to the Lady Bulldogs' efforts, while Izzy Evans scored 10.

Deer Lodge picked up a 47-40 Western 6B victory over league foe Arlee on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Skyla Peirson led Deer Lodge with 17 points.

Two Eagle keeps pace with win over Superior

Two Eagle bounced back from a loss to Charlo earlier in the week to down Superior 46-40 in Western 14C league play on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The Eagles ground out a tough-fought win, leading 19-18 at halftime. They scored 27 points in the second half to pull away from Superior. The win improved Two Eagle to 5-2 in league play and 8-4 overall.

Charlo rolls over Alberton

Keaton Piedalue scored 16 points as Charlo put up a 68-19 Western 14C victory over Alberton on Friday, Jan. 20.

The Viking defense raided the scoreboard, as Alberton only managed six points in the second half. Stetson Reum notched 13 points, while Wesley Anderson had 12 points.

Charlo picks up league win over Two Eagle

Charlo remained atop the Western 14C, unbeaten in league play thanks to a 63-60 victory over Two Eagle on Thursday, Jan. 19. The home game for the Vikings had them going into halftime down 31-27 to the power Eagle offense.

Charlo went on a 13-6 run in the third quarter to claw back into the lead and held off the Eagles in the fourth. Keaton Piedalue led the Vikings with 20 points, while Wesley Anderson notched 16 points with ten rebounds, Stetson Reum scored 14, hauled in 10 rebounds, and dished out nine assists.

Two Eagle's Cai Burke finished the game with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Devon Arlee had 11, and Daniel Black Wolf had 10 points.

Two Eagle trounces Alberton

Two Eagle picked up an easy road win against Western 14C foe Alberton 72-26 on Tuesday, Jan. 17, using a 33-5 run in the first quarter to cruise to victory. Riley After Buffalo notched 18 points, while Thomas Spotted Eagle and Cai Burke each had 11 points.

Two Eagle led 45-17 and held Alberton to nine points in the first half. Devon Arlee added 10 points to the Eagles' efforts. Nine different Two Eagle players scored in the game.

Superior defeats Two Eagle River

Despite 20 points from Sarah Gardipe, Two Eagle River fell to Superior 64-41 in Western 14C league action Saturday, Jan. 21. Superior jumped out to a 26-6 lead and never lost the advantage the rest of the way.

Dayani Piapot added nine points, and Aereon Miller had six points in the Lady Eagles' efforts. Two Eagle fell to 1-6 in league play.

Charlo holds Alberton to single digits

Holding your foe to single digits is excellent in football and a feat in basketball. The Charlo girls' basketball team achieved that with a 56-9 Western 14C victory over Alberton on Friday, Jan. 20.

Alberton managed just five points in the first half, four in the third quarter, and it was shut out in the fourth quarter. Sheadon Kain notched 16 points for the Lady Vikings, Seeley McDonald added 12 points, and Leah Cohoon had nine points.

Charlo is keeping pace with a 6-1 league record, just behind Superior's 7-0 league mark. The Lady Vikings are 8-3 overall.

Charlo defeats Two Eagle

Hayleigh Smith posted a triple-double, and Charlo downed Two Eagle 50-16 in Western 14C league play on Thursday, Jan. 19. The Vikings defense held the Lady Eagles to eight points in both the first and second halves of the game.

Headon Kain led all scorers with 18 points, including three three-pointers for Charlo. Seeley McDonald added eight points in the win.
