Lakers, Mariners split doubleheader

A doubleheader on June 28 in Kalispell saw the Mission Valley Mariners topple the Lakers in the first game and drop the second contest.

In the first game, Cymian Kauley and Zak Muzquiz combined to scatter five Kalispell hits and hold the Lakers offensively in a 4-3 victory. Kauley pitched five innings, striking out three and walking just one.

Mission Valley took a 1-0 lead on an Espn Fisher sacrifice fly in the top of the third, followed by Holden Emerson driving in a run in the top of the fourth. However, the Lakers answered back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame to tie up the game.

The Mariners pitcher, Kauley, helped his own cause by hitting a sacrifice to drive in a run while Cody Haggard drove in a run for the 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth. While Kalispell would snag a run in the bottom of the sixth, a scoreless seventh secured the win for Mission Valley.

Muzquiz pitched the final two innings for Mission Valley, allowing no earned runs or hits. In the bottom of the seventh, he got two flyouts and a strikeout looking to retire the Lakers in order.

Espn Fisher finished with two hits with an RBI, while Landon Pablo also had two hits, as did Holden Emerson. Dawson DuMont smacked a double, while Cole Wadsworth had a triple. Mission Valley finished with 10 hits as a team.

In game two, a big second inning by Kalispell lifted them past Mission Valley 11-5. Fisher led the team with three hits and two doubles, but the Mariners couldn’t overcome an early deficit.

Mission Valley took the 1-0 lead in the first as Dawson DuMont drove in a run. The Lakers, however, responded in the bottom of the second with a five-run rally.

Mission Valley did notch two runs in the top of the third, one off a balk and another on a passed ball as DuMont found the home plate. The Mariners, however, would not make a mark on the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Kalispell notched three runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the bottom of the sixth.

Landon Shoemake and Landon Pablo combined to strike out five Laker batters while allowing six hits and nine earned runs.

Mission Valley fell to 13-10 on the season with the loss.
