Mighty Dog Roofing and Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project combined forces on July 14 to help a veteran living in Pablo who was in need of a new roof.

“It’s a huge blessing to do something like this and to be able to have the opportunity and be in the position to offer a free roof like this,” said Nick Whitehead, owner of Mighty Dog Roofing.

Nick Whitehead is a U.S. veteran and owner of the Mighty Dog Roofing franchise in western Montana. He teamed up with Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project to help out Edward Anthony, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Anthony moved to the Mission Valley in May but, once he and his wife Debby moved in, they realized their roof was compromised.

“He just bought the house in May. His insurance said you need to get a new roof or we’re gonna drop you,” said Whitehead.

They were in danger of having to relocate, but a search through Purple Heart Homes helped match Anthony with a roofing replacement.

Whitehead said, as a former veteran, he is happy to give back to veterans in Montana and is headed to Butte to help another veteran with their roofing struggles.

“It’s a crappy situation for him,” Whitehead said of Anthony’s situation. “We came in and you know what, as a fellow veteran, I figured let’s give back.”

Mighty Dog Roofing has been going for a little over a year and Whitehead said, after surpassing his previous estimates, he wanted to lend a helping hand.

“I had our goal set for the year when we were first starting and we quadrupled that goal our first year in business,” Whitehead said. “As a thanks for all the community support of helping us get started as a business, we’re gonna give back a few roofs.”

This project was made possible through the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, an initiative that pairs over 300 different roofing agencies with veterans in need of a new roof.

“They supply the shingles, I supply the labor,” Whitehead said. “It’s a free roof for a veteran that’s in an interesting situation.”

Whitehead said he would love to do projects like this one as frequently as once a month but he is happy regardless that he can give back to fellow veterans in Montana.

“To be able to now have the opportunity to give that back is always a warming, fuzzy feeling for yourself,” he said. “But it’s not about me – it’s just about really giving a roof to somebody who’s deserving of it.”
