Hope Morrison heads to UM Davidson Honors College

Recent Polson High grad Hope Morrison is among a talented group of first-year students arriving at the University of Montana this fall as the Davidson Honors College Dean’s Leadership Scholars. The scholarships, which recognize academic excellence, demonstrated leadership and potential, are among the most prestigious awards for incoming students in UM’s Davidson Honors College and significantly reduce the cost of attending UM.

Hope served as debate captain and was a local government intern with the Lake County commissioners. She also has participated in yearbook, tennis, debate, student government and Key Club.

DHC Dean Tim Nichols said this year’s incoming students are accomplished scholars, athletes, artists, scientists and leaders in their schools and communities.

“The academic and co-curricular achievements of this class are exceptional,” Nichols said. “We are thrilled to welcome them to the Davidson Honors College, where they will be surrounded by other talented, motivated students for an elevated, enriched and enlivened UM education.”

Forward Montana offers fellowship

The Forward Montana Foundation is seeking applicants for its fellowship for high school-aged students, which begins in August and continues through mid-November.

The cohort of 10 students from across the state meet remotely, with the exception of an

in-person retreat in the Paradise Valley from Aug. 11-13.

According to a press release, Forward Montana is looking for students “who are self-reliant, excited about democracy, passionate about making positive change in their community, and are looking to become a civic leader in their community.”

Fellows will get hands-on experience by participating in leadership training sessions, conducting voter registration in their communities, mobilizing voters, teaching others about civics, and producing a final, culminating project of their choice. Upon successful completion of the fellowship, fellows will receive a $500 stipend, and walk away with a robust civic education and skills in event planning and community organizing.

Priority applications close July 7 but will be accepted through mid-July. To apply, visit forwardmontana.org/workwithus or contact Devin, Forward Montana Foundation’s Civic Education Organizer at devin@forwardmontana.org or 406-542-8683.
