Local ice-hockey goalie heads to Nationals
Polson hockey goalie Summer Newman is off to the national championships for youth players in California this weekend.
Polson High School sophomore Summer Newman heads to California March 30-April 3 for the 2023 Chipotle-USA Hockey Girls’ Tier II 19U 1A National Championship.
Newman is the goalie for the Montana Wolves 19U Girls Ice Hockey Team, based out of Bozeman. The team, consisting of Montana players from Billings, Bozeman, Kalispell, Missoula, Polson and Sidney, is in its first year of existence. Montana is part of the USA Hockey Northern Plains District, which also includes North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, and is one of the 12 districts in the United States.
The national tournament brings together the top 12 teams, one from each district. The Wolves face off for their first game against the Piedmont Predators from Virginia on Thursday, March 30, at the Great Park Ice in Irvine, Calif.
Newman finished off her Montana Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) season with the Flathead Lady Fusion by helping the team win back-to-back MAHA 19U State Championships. The MAHA State Tournament was held March 2-5 in Butte.
