Volunteers help ready Polson golf course

| May 4, 2023 12:00 AM

Golfers dot the fairways and greens of the Polson Bay Golf Course, 111 Bayview Drive. It’s spring, and the golf course is open.

With green grass replacing brown, golf course clean-up was sped along, thanks to a volunteer group of golfers came to help. More than 30 workers picked up branches, removed leaves from around the monuments at each hole, and gathered any other refuse.

“They were here first thing in the morning,” said Roger Wallace, PGA golf director. “And they worked until about 2 p.m.”

Board member Larry Ashcraft helped rally the troops for the effort, as he has for the past eight years. “After a long, destructive winter with many trees downed and debris everywhere, these volunteers tackled the project with many of them well into their 80s,” he said.

Afterwards, they were treated to hamburgers for their efforts.

Ashcraft thanks Pat Nowlen, director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Polson, and Polson Bay Golf Superintendent Jeff Korff for their guidance.

“I’m so happy to see people give of their time and energy,” Ashcraft added. “There were some stiff and sore golfers the next day.”

A group of volunteers will continue to weed around the monuments and, in some cases plant flowers. Their efforts make a difference, says Ashcraft.

“The course is in great condition and something in which our community should take great pride,” he said.
