Players bring "Steel Magnolias" to Polson stage

| May 25, 2023 12:00 AM

The Port Polson Players, in association with Mission Valley Friends of the Arts, open the historic log Theatre on the Lake for the summer with the southern classic “Steel Magnolias.”

The production brings the funny, poignant masterpiece to life over two weekends, May 25-28 and June 1-4, with curtain times at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

The film version, released in 1989, starred Sally Fields, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley McLaine, Julia Roberts and Daryl Hannah as the crew at a beauty salon in a small Louisiana town. The film is an adaptation of Robert Harling’s 1987 play about the bond between the hairdressers and their customers, and how they cope with the death of one of their own with love, tears and a healthy dose of laughter.

The Players’ version of “Steel Magnolias” stars local actors Erika Jennison, Ann Peacock, Jeanie Siracusa, Cathy Gillhouse, Veronica Marquardt and Carolyn McDonald.

The Port Polson Players officially launch their summer season in July with the following productions: Tim McGuire’s heartfelt Irish comedy with music, “Carry Me O’er,” July 7-16; Larry Shue’s razor-sharp comedy, “The Nerd,” July 21-Aug. 6; and Leonard Gershe’s poignant “Butterflies Are Free,” Aug. 11-27.
