ORI offers owl banding and survey
The Owl Research Institute is running a Saw-whet owl banding station at the Flathead Lake Biological Station this fall, and opens the experience to the public from approximately 7-10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. The event is free, but sign-up is required.
The data collected from the station will contribute to global efforts to learn more about migration routes, timing and habitat use of this charismatic little owl. These outings offer the public an opportunity to learn, observe and ask questions.
Researchers from ORI will offer a short presentation to explain the process, then check the mist nets on an hourly basis. If an owl is captured, it will be banded.
The workers will discuss owl ecology and answer questions in between net checks. A typical evening results in the capture of up to 10 owls.
Participants should dress for chilly weather and bring hot beverages, snacks and bear spray.
Those who are registered will meet a staff member at the main gate to the FLBS at 7 p.m. (gate will be locked). Parking will be in the main lot with a short walk to the banding station. People
with disabilities can be accommodated.
Participants may stay for as long as they like. Sessions will be canceled/rescheduled if it is raining, snowing or excessively windy.
To sign up, contact Darcy Thomas at 406-407-8263 or darcy@flatheadaudubon.org or Margaret Parodi at 406-837-1371 or mrparodi@charter.net.
Flathead Audubon requires both a phone number and e-mail address in the event of rescheduling due to the weather.
