Charles Hammerberg of Polson passed away peacefully on April 15, 2024.

He was born Jan. 3, 1931, to Fritz and Edith Hammerberg in McKeesport, Penn., and graduated from McKeesport High School in 1948. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Duke University in 1954.

After college, he worked for the American Bridge Division of U.S. Steel for a short time and then entered the U.S. Army in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1957. During this time he married Norma Hassel, daughter of Clyde and Jane Hassel, on Aug. 27, 1955.

After he was discharged from the Army, he went to work for Hammerberg Construction Inc. Upon the death of his father, he assumed the presidency of the construction company and he held his position until his retirement in 1995. He moved with Norma to Polson, Montana following retirement.

Chuck was active in a number of organizations, serving, at various times, on the board of directors for McKeesport National Bank, McKeesport YMCA, McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery, Youghiogheny Country Club, Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church, and the McKeesport Rotary Club.

He was a member of the Polson Bay Golf Club and so proud that he had five hole-in-ones. He enjoyed many years of golfing and fishing with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Norma; son Mike (Leslie), and grandchildren Joe (Taurie), Jonah (Carlissa) and Ceabian; son Eric (Jill), and grandchildren Stowe, Bryn and Shaine. He also has six great-grandchildren.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dr. Larry D. Hammerberg.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Jude’s Hospital or Mission Valley Animal Shelter in his name.
