Mission Valley Mariners place third in State A Legion Tournament
Mariners open up state tournament with victory
Mission Valley opened up the Class A American Legion State Tournament at their home field with an 11-1 victory over the Vauxhall Spurs on Wednesday, July 31. Dawson DuMont picked up the pitching win for the Mariners, going five innings and striking out nine while allowing just two hits.
The Mariners’ offense found the scoreboard while Dawson kept the Spurs off it. Mission Valley scored a run in the first, exploded for five runs in the third inning, and then notched four runs in the sixth before finishing off the game with a run in the seventh.
DuMont helped his own cause with a home run, while Cody Haggard had two hits, a double, and two RBI. Wyatt Wadsworth also had two hits, a double and two RBI.
The Mariners had 13 hits as a team. Landon Shoemake had a double and an RBI, while Aiden Gfroerer also drove in two runs. Catcher Holden Emerson drove in two runs as well.
The win kicked off Mission Valley’s state tournament hosting as they clinched the West’s No. 2 seed in the tournament by hosting the event.

Mission Valley falls to Gallatin Valley
Gallatin Valley handed Mission Valley its first loss of the tournament on Thursday, August 1. Gallatin Valley had 10 hits en route to an 8-2 victory.
After a scoreless first inning, the Outlaws scored four runs in the second inning and another run in the third. They finished their scoring run by posting three more scores in the fourth. Mission Valley notched two runs in the top of the sixth but couldn’t overcome three errors in the setback.
Dawson DuMont had a double and two RBI in the game, while Cole Wadsworth, Cody Haggard, and Zak Muzquiz also had hits. Aiden Gfroerer finished the game 2-for-2.
Gallatin Valley would go on to play in the state title game against Glacier.

Mariners win 1-0 over Lethbridge
Mission Valley bounced back from their loss to Gallatin Valley with a 1-0 victory over Lethbridge on Friday, Aug. 2, in Polson.
Cole Wadsworth pitched a seven-inning one-hitter against Lethbridge, striking out six batters along the way. He also scored the winning run in the matchup.
In the bottom of the fifth, Wadsworth doubled, then stole third. Dawson DuMont drew a walk and then tricked Lethbridge defenders into thinking he was stealing, allowing Wadsworth to score. Wadsworth crossed the plate just before DuMont could be tagged out.
Mission Valley had four hits in the game, with Wadsworth posting three of them, and Holden Emerson swatting the other. The win kept the tournament hopes alive for the Mariners, who advanced to a Saturday matchup against the Western A familiar foe of the Glacier Twins.

Mission Valley defeats Glacier
Mission Valley scored early, held on, and then plated the winning run in an eight-inning 6-5 classic victory over eventual state champion Glacier on Saturday, Aug. 3.
The Mariners scored five runs in the first to go up 5-1, while Glacier responded with three runs in the second and a run in the sixth to force extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Cymian Kauley doubled and was driven home by Cole Wadsworth.
Cash Atkison pitched the first six innings of the game, striking out three and allowing four earned runs. Cymian Kauley pitched the seventh and eighth inning, striking out one and allowing just one hit.
Cody Haggard finished the game with two RBI, while Wyatt Wadsworth, Aiden Gfroerer and Cole Wadsworth also had RBI.
The win advanced the Mariners to Sunday, Aug. 3.

Season ends for Mariners with loss to Outlaws
Mission Valley again faced Gallatin Valley Sunday morning, and the Mariners fell 14-4 in their final game of the season at the State Class A American Legion Baseball Tournament.
Mission Valley led 2-0 after one inning before Gallatin Valley scored five runs in the first and six runs in the third. Mission Valley would add two runs in the bottom of the third but could never close the gap.
Mission Valley finished with five hits including Dawson DuMont going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Cody Haggard and Holden Emerson also had hits and drive in a run. Cymian Kauley had the Mariners other hit in the loss.
Gallatin Valley finished with 10 hits and moved on to the state title game where the Outlaws lost to Glacier. Mission Valley finished in third, with 28-21 on the season.
