Randall J. Lumpry, 34, of Ronan entered a plea of guilty and was sentenced on charges of felony burglary, misdemeanor criminal mischief, and violating conditions of a conditional release during an appearance Jan. 24 in Polson District Court.

He was sentenced to a total of 10 years with five years suspended for breaking into another man’s home and stealing his personal property.

The plea came as part of an agreement that dismisses charges from another alleged burglary and assault involving the same victim. Evidence in the previous case was deemed insufficient to proceed with prosecuting it – much to the dismay of the victim.

According to court records, on June 30, 2022, a man by the initials J.F. contacted law enforcement to report that his residence was broken into, and personal property was taken, including fireworks. The next day, J.F. contacted law enforcement again saying someone came forward with information regarding his missing property.

Law enforcement accompanied J.F. to where his property was located, and the person indicated that Lumpry had been there the night before, handing out fireworks to children.

Lumpry was also sentenced on a charge of misdemeanor criminal mischief for causing more than $1, 800 to a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy’s patrol unit when he was arrested Nov. 3, 2023, for violating the terms of his conditional release.

The case that was dismissed also involved J.F. In that matter, on July 7, 2022, two masked men allegedly entered J.F.’s residence and assaulted him. J.F. testified at the sentencing hearing that Lumpry was one of them and “tried to kill” him.

Court records show that several witnesses provided Lumpry with an alibi and alternative suspect. That case was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Before announcing the 10-year DOC term, Judge Molly Owen explained that, unfortunately, there are occasions when justice isn’t fair and it’s especially hard on the victims. She ordered Lumpry to pay restitution of $1,500 to J.F. and $1, 863.33 to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for damages to the patrol unit.

Lumpry was given credit for already serving 489 days of jail time.
