Sharbono signs with Hastings College
Aubrey Sharbono has been a force on the wrestling mat for the Mission-Charlo wrestling program these past two years. She is now bringing her talents to Hastings College in Nebraska.
To say she is a fast learner would be an understatement. Sharbono had never wrestled two years ago, but after seeing her younger brother in the Mission-Charlo program and with Montana sanctioning girls wrestling, Sharbono gave it a try and became the first Charlo girl to wrestle in school history.
“It just looked fun, and I heard Montana sanctioned it,” Sharbono said. “I asked my parents and got to try it. It was interesting learning the moves, and while it took me a couple of matches, I really started to enjoy it.”
Sharbono made Divisionals and State last year and then wrestled during the summer doing AAU/club wrestling for freestyle and going to camps. She works hard at her sport, going to school at 5:30 a.m. to lift weights during the season.
As she became interested in continuing to wrestle, she reached out to coaches on Facebook, sending them questions, and received several offers to wrestle in college. One of those was Hastings College, located in Hastings, Neb. Sharbono liked the veterinary program.
“They also do block scheduling, which works much better and is more suitable for me,” Sharbono said. “I hope to become a vet, specifically for livestock.”
Sharbono had a video call with a professor from the university, an admissions staff member, and Hastings Wrestling Head Coach Cara Romeike. The program has been ranked in the top 15 in the NAIA and recruits wrestlers from around the world.
While Sharbono has never been to Nebraska to visit, she has traveled through it on a trip to Kansas.
“It will be a fun experience to explore a new place and get to wrestle more,” Sharbono said.
Moving to this new level will be another challenge for the young athlete. But she’s ready. This season brought her to the top of several podiums for Mission-Charlo, and she made it to the state tournament again.
Sharbono wanted to thank her coaches, Jacen Petersen, Jamie Petersen, Lyle Cronk and Logan Torgeson, for helping her learn the sport, and her parents for letting her wrestle, along with the supporters of the Mission-Charlo wrestling program.
