Class C Girls: Charlo posts two wins
Charlo used a big run in the third quarter to pull away from Hot Springs in a Western 14C bout on Friday, Jan. 19. Hanging onto a 23-19 halftime lead, the Lady Vikings went on a 17-6 run in the third quarter and held the Savage Heat to five points in the fourth quarter for the 52-30 win.
"I think we are hitting our stride at the right time," Charlo Head Coach Jeff Buck said. "We are a very young team, and I feel they are pulling it all together at the right time. We have discovered our team identity is playing pressure defense."
Darcy Coleman and Seeley McDonald each had 11 points for Charlo, while Maddison Harris added nine.
According to the coach, Harris is a sophomore who moved to the area from Nashua, N.H., and was recently cleared to play varsity basketball by the Montana High School Association.
She comes off the bench for us and can play any position at a high level,” Buck said. “Against Hot Springs, we got in a little foul trouble, and she came off the bench and gave us nine points, six rebounds, and three or four steals."
Charlo improved to 3-0 in the Western 14C play and 6-4 overall. The team has two seniors, one junior, and the rest are underclassmen. Buck said that the team has been on an upward trajectory since the season-opening tip-off tournament.
"My girls work hard all the time," Buck said. "It doesn't matter what the score is or how they feel that day. They are going to give you absolutely everything they have. I think that is just part of the culture of Lady Viking Basketball that started with Coach Thompson and continued with Coach Voegele. It is something that I really hope I can continue here."
Last Thursday, Jan. 18, Charlo fell to Drummond 49-36 in non-league basketball action on the road. Sheadon Kain scored 20 of those points.

Charlo held their Western 14C opponent St. Regis to five points in the first half on their way to a 60-19 victory on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Seeley McDonald led the team with 15 points, and 10 different Lady Vikings scored against the Lady Tigers.
Charlo led 17-3 in the first quarter and 34-5 at halftime. Darcy Coleman added 11 points to the Lady Vikings' efforts, and Maziey McDonald notched nine. Charlo made it to the free-throw line 15 times and hit nine of those charity shots.
"I feel the girls are really starting to 'get' what I am asking them to do on the court," Buck said. "Being in the right place at the right time doesn't really mean you are understanding the nuances of the game. I think they are getting to the point of fully understanding the new concepts and are making in-game decisions on their own to adapt to what our opponents are throwing at them."
