Wide-load snags power line, backs up traffic on 93
Traffic was backed up for around two hours on Highway 93 last Friday afternoon after a wide-load tractor-trailer snagged a power line just east of the Polson bridge.
According to a press release from Polson Police Chief George Simpson, a commercial semi-trailer hauling oversized freight was northbound on U.S. Hwy. 93 when the freight snagged an overhead line. The snag, combined with the forward momentum of the semi, set off a chain reaction, knocking down two light poles and two power poles at around 5:20 p.m.
The incident also caused damage to two unoccupied vehicles as well as signage on adjacent businesses.
No injuries were reported, and driver impairment did not appear to be a factor, according to Simpson. He said the truck was pulling a heavy load of industrial equipment, and the driver had permit to do so from the Montana Department of Transportation.
The incident remains under investigation.
Mission Valley Power crews responded quickly to minimize the power outage. Polson City Fire was also on site to help with safety issues and MDOT assisted with debris removal and clearing the highway.
“We are grateful for all our public safety partners for rendering aid and safely restoring our roadways,” Simpson said. “This incident had all the potential to be much worse during this busy summer.”
He also expressed appreciation for the patience of motorists who were forced to wait in their vehicles “as crews worked swiftly to re-open the highway.”
