President Sandra Boham retires from SKC

| June 20, 2024 12:00 AM

Salish Kootenai College Board of Directors recently announced that President Sandra Boham has retired, effective June 7.

In a press release, the board noted that SKC “has had much success under the leadership of Dr. Boham. We are grateful for the service she has provided SKC and our community during her tenure.”

Dr. Boham spent 16 years at the college, eight of those as its president.

The board has named Dr. Michael M. Munson as interim president, and embarked on a nationwide search to fill the leadership role.

Munson (Séliš, Ql̓ispé, and other ancestries) attributes much of her passion for Indigenous education to her parents, yayá, and elders. She grew up in Missoula, and earned a bachelor's in elementary education and a master’s in curriculum and instruction, focusing on Indian Education and science.

She has served communities, schools, teachers, and students across Montana, first as a teacher, and then as an Indian Education Implementation Specialist and American Indian Student Achievement Specialist with the Montana Office of Public Instruction.

With the Séliš-Ql̓ispé Culture Committee (SQCC) as her guide, her doctoral work through the Indian Leadership Education and Development (I-LEAD) Program at Montana State University, was focused on leading the revitalization of Séliš and Ql̓ispé education.

During her tenure with Salish Kootenai College, Munson has served as dean of Native American Studies (NAS) and as faculty within both the Division of Education and NAS. She has also served as SKC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs.
