Local cooks win with beef recipes
Mrs. Ivan M. Hoff (Avis Ann) Dagmar, the daughter of St. Ignatius residents, is the first place winner of the Adult Beef Cook-Off held in Bozeman, Jan 28.
She was awarded a $100 check by Mrs. Roland Mosher, Augusta, president of the Montana CowBelles, for her entry “Big Sky Beef with Udder Sauce.”
Mrs. Hoff will receive a trip to the National Beef Cook-Off in Omaha, Neb., in September, where she will be competing with winners from other states.
Mrs. Peter Geldrich (Marie) of Pablo, was one of six contestants who also competed in the Adult Beef Cook-Off. Mrs. Geldrich’s entry was “Meat Loaf in a Breadbasket.”

Freezing culverts tie up road crews
If some county roads were closed during Monday’s snowstorm, residents can blame stock water, according to County Commissioner Wes Leishman.
He said stock water freezing from continuous runoff into culverts “is causing us terrible problems.”
When culverts freeze, the water manages to find its way over the road, and fighting that condition in the Post Creek section tied up most of the county road crew in the lower portion of the valley Monday.
Book borrowers to receive pardons
Help is in sight for anyone frightened to be seen in the public library because of his overdue book(s).
Skulk no more. An amnesty has been granted by the St. Ignatius Public Library during the month of February.
Get overdue books back this month and receive an unconditional pardon.
The usual ceremony of being stripped of rank and insignia while the drum rolls and the culprit’s library card burns is being dispensed with, the board agreed.

Ronan Girl Staters announced by Legion
Girls selected from Ronan High School to attend Girls State this year are Bonnie Stephens, delegate, and Elizabeth Preston, alternate.
Bonnie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Stephens of Round Butte. She has been a chorus member for three years, secretary-treasurer of sophomore and junior classes, a member of the Spanish club and drama club and is also a 4-H member and plays the piano.
Elizabeth is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay W. Preston. She is secretary of the thespian club, member of the German, business, friendship, and ski clubs, and is in chorus. She is a member of the Rainbow and 4-H club.
As president of her 4-H club, she attended the State Congress in 1973.
Friendship Club of RHS hears from Tom Swaney
Tom (Bearhead) Swaney was a guest speaker in a meeting of the Friendship Club in Ronan High School Tuesday evening. Bearhead spoke to about 15 students on the topic of Indian rights and the history of the Indian people who were and still are the victims of the whiteman’s society.
Bearhead encouraged the students to let their organization develop and become strong. “I think you young people are starting off on something that parents don’t even understand,” said Bearhead.
He also encouraged students to try to see both sides of each issue and to let their conscience be their guide.
