Walmart and the PSC: Not political?

| May 23, 2024 12:00 AM

Recently while collecting signatures for Public Service Commission (PSC) District 4, I was informed by the Walmart store manager that they have a policy of not allowing any political activity on their property. The irony of the situation, Walmart not allowing political activity, was profoundly humorous given the recent PSC ruling in favor of NorthWestern Energy.

A brief reminder that in October 2023 the Republican PSC ruled to allow NorthWestern to raise their rates 28% for residential customers and small business owners. But large industrial users on the NorthWestern grid, including Walmart, did not receive a rate increase. Essentially, the PSC granted a subsidy to Walmart that residential customers have to pay for.

Once again, Socialism for corporations at the expense of everyone else and Capitalism for working people.

Now, the Walmart store manager was most likely unaware of the political handout the PSC gave the Walmart Corporation. However, when it comes time to vote in November please remember that the current configuration of the PSC has regularly sided with the corporate interests of NorthWestern Energy and other large corporations including Walmart at the expense of hard-working Montanans.

If you have family members or friends who rely on energy from NorthWestern ask them about their utility bill. Then remind them the PSC voted to increase their utility bill.
