Mission police host Krav Maga self-defense class for women
The St. Ignatius Police Department is hosting a free women’s self-defense class, taught by Amberly Walker of Ten Snakes Krav Maga. She also offers a free class at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 2 and Dec. 7 at the Ronan CSKT Senior Center. Classes are for ages 13 and up.
St. Ignatius Chief of Police Jason Acheson says the 90-minute session promises to provide “a sense of empowerment, self-confidence and a great attitude, and also kick start a new and healthy journey.”
Along the way, he said participants will learn techniques “for self-protection and self-preservation.”
During his tenure as police chief, Acheson has spearheaded community training in the use of NARCAN, suicide awareness and CPR, as well as facilitating discussions about substance abuse.
His goal, he says, “is to get the community involved and give citizens a chance to feel a new sense of purpose, involvement and empower them in ways they may not have felt before.”
Krav Maga, meaning “contact combat” in Hebrew is a self-defense system that teaches a variety of simple, easy-to-remember techniques designed to address real-world situations. The Krav Maga Institute, kravmagainstitute.com, describes it as “an effective, modern, and dynamic self-defense and fighting system."
“This is excellent training,” Acheson says, based on his own experience. “Because of what they offer, I'm also a new student of theirs for my own personal and professional reasons.”
