Lady Pirates score first conference win
Polson picked up its first-ever win in the Southwest A Conference, defeating Loyola 4-1 on Thursday, September 12. Mady Luikart scored two goals to push her season total to 11.
“We were very impressed with the way our girls came out in this game and the way they are adapting to a new formation,” Polson Head Coach Heather Howell said. “We knew Loyola would be a good match for us, and after seeing their past two conference wins, we wanted to test them right from the starting whistle.”
Luikart scored on a Vivian Grainey assist in the fifth minute, and then 13 minutes later, Luikart scored on a penalty kick for the first half 2-0 lead.
“We were able to possess the ball well, especially early in the game, which led to playmaking opportunities in the attack,” Howell said.
In the 48th minute, Rosie Lies scored on a Luikart assist, and then again in the 52nd minute, again assisted by Luikart. Lies has four goals on the season.
“Our defensive unit has been working hard at practice, and that showed on Saturday when Haislea Sternick, Kila Cannon, LaurieLee Treux, Audrey Matt, and goalkeeper Olivia Ramirez held Loyola to a near shut out, with the lone goal coming from a direct free kick just outside the box and allowing only five shots on goal during the game,” Howell said.
Polson finished with 12 shots on goal, while Loyola had five shots on goal. Goalkeeper Olivia Ramirez had four saves.
“Sternick’s ability to maintain possession out of the defense, combined with play-making vision from Luikart and Lies in the attack, really helped the Lady Pirates come together for their first conference win,” Howell said. “Strong play from wings Ciri Nice and Viviane Armstrong contributed to the offensive opportunities and defensive stops for the Lady Pirates.”
The Lady Pirates improved to 1-1 in conference and 2-2 overall, while Loyola was handed its first loss of the year.
