Polson's girls soccer team kept the Lady Blue Devils down, downing them 2-1 to improve to 3-1 in Southern A Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 19 while Corvallis continues to look for that elusive first win.

The game was scoreless in the first half and for most of the second half. The Lady Pirates’ Rosie Lies broke the seal with a goal in the 75th minute on an assist from Mady Luikart.

“Senior Madyson Luikart and freshman Rosie Lies have been finding great chemistry on the field to help open offensive opportunities for the Lady Pirates,” Howell said.

Corvallis tied it up a minute latter on an own goal by Polson. That was quickly rectified.

Luikart found Lies again, who scored her second goal of the game two minutes later to snatch victory from the jaws of a draw. Polson had  21 shots as a team, while goalkeeper Olivia Ramirez had five saves.

“Polson defenders Haislea Sternick, Kila Cannon, LaurieLee Truex, and Audrey Matt have been working very well as a unit to help limit the number of opponent's shots on goal to only 16 total shots over the past three games, with goalkeeper Olivia Ramirez tallying saves on 14 of those shots,” Howell said.

Polson currently has 26 goals on the season.

Frenchtown can’t slow down Luikarts, Lies, Lemm and Armstrong

In a competitive Souther A Conference, Polson is keeping pace. The Lady Pirates defeated Frenchtown 7-1, showcasing the second-most powerful offense in the league on Tuesday September 17.

Mady Luikart did Mady Luikart things, notching a first-half hat trick while assisting on two other goals. While Frenchtown got on the board first in the 29th minute, Luikart scored in the 14th, 24th and 25th minute. Rosie Lies assisted on two of those goals while Viviane Armstrong provided the key pass on the other goal.

Lies scored a goal of her own in the 44th minute on a Luikart assist, while Baylee Lemm proved the Lemms are a legacy soccer family in town, scoring on as assist from Luikart in the 64th minute. Armstrong scored in the 74th minute thanks to a pass from Lies, and then Lies scored her second goal in the 75th minute, assisted by Madison York.

“We were very excited to see more players involved in our attack, with assists and goals coming from a multitude of players, and several goals starting their build-up from our defensive line,” Howell said.

Polson had 35 shots on goal compared to Frenchtown’s six goals. Luikart had 10 shots, while Lies had 12 shots, forming the dangerous Double L offense for the Lady Pirates.

“The best goal of our season so far came in our Frenchtown game, where senior Haislea Sternick swung the ball to outside back Kila Cannon, who turned the ball upfield to find sophomore midfielder Viviane Armstrong,” Howell said. “Armstrong immediately fed the ball to senior Madyson Luikart who netted the goal for the Lady Pirates. This goal was exactly the style of play we are looking for in our team, and it was exciting as coaches to see it come together during a game.”

Howell added that the focus this season has been playing as a unit and it’s been encouraging to see the development both in the defensive and offensive department.

“It is great to see our girls gaining confidence and momentum as we are going deeper into conference play, and we are excited to see them continue this upward trajectory with how they are playing,” Howell said.

More conference action is slated this week, as Polson will host Loyola on Thursday, September 26 at 5 p.m. and then will go on the road to play at Hamilton on Saturday, September 28.
