Ronan council updated on tourism grant
Jan Tusick, executive director of Mission West Community Development Organization, updated the Ronan City Council at last Wednesday’s meeting on the Pilot Community Tourism Grant from the Montana Department of Commerce that the City of Ronan received.
Ronan was among eight communities to receive a $1.25 million grant last year, aimed at improving tourist appeal and economic vitality.
The steering committee is reviewing a contract with KLJ Engineering and Planning Service to help move some projects forward. One project, Tusick said, was to help with planning aimed at improving walkability and sidewalks downtown.
Dan Miller, director of public projects for Ronan, suggested a Professional Engineering Report would help provide information on what a new streetscape would look like, how wide the sidewalks would be and how to improve accessibility. He added that typical PER gives two or three options, layout, technical information and prices.
The city will also plans to apply for two other grants – Transportation Alternatives and Safe Streets for All.
Miller also said Mission West has been talking to the Western Montana Musicians Co-op, currently located at the Red Poppy. The nonprofit may be moving into the Entertainer Theater building on Main Street, which was shuttered during the COVID pandemic.
He also noted that Aloha Veterinary Services, currently located in Polson, has purchased the Flower Mill building and plans to move in soon.
Council members also discussed a facilities agreement with the Ronan softball group. The softballers will need to come up with an agreement. Council member Lindsey Myer and Mayor Chris Adler will contact the organization.
The council approved an open container permit for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Annual Fundraising Banquet at the community center on March 1.
The next meeting will be Feb. 12 at 6 p.m.
