Summer Reading Program promotes learning

Boats are out on the lake, people are walking around, and the traffic is getting a bit denser. These are all the tell-tale signs of summer in the Mission Valley.

Another sign of summer can be found away from the heat of July and indoors at libraries, where both Polson and Ronan are running their annual summer reading programs.

The Summer Reading Program is a rich part of the two libraries' history and a way to connect community for both the North Lake County Public Library and the Ronan Library District.

The theme for both programs revolves around art with a theme of “Color Our World.”

In an increasingly busy digital age, the pressure is on reading to not only compete with outdoor activities like swimming and running but to also compete with social media habits like doom scrolling and video games. That problem goes for both kids and adults.

“We highly encourage them to read physical books, especially with the younger kids,” said Michelle Fenger, director for Ronan Library District. At the same time, she says they’re supportive of all forms of reading, including e-readers and audiobooks.

The library programs are all about getting people of all ages to read; they also are an opportunity to help educate and connect with the community with programs that offer activities that aren’t just about reading.

“Our hope is to get people into the library to learn about all the amazing services, programs and collections we offer,” said Julie Lynn, the Youth Services Librarian in Polson.

What makes the summer reading programs so special is the boost it gives kids by helping them maintain or even grow in their reading level over the summer through continued learning.

Throughout the summer, readers complete reading time to reach certain benchmarks, and earn prizes and tickets for their accomplishments.

The tickets can be used for a chance to win a variety of different prizes for all ages. The prizes range from coloring materials to Legos and even a guitar with lessons.

While the summer reading program has already started for both libraries and ending in August, it’s not too late to sign up. Check out either location's website or stop by the library for information on how to sign up and join in on the fun.
