News of the World

(As reported in latest news bulletins)

Wendall Wilkie, Indiana utility magnate, who captured the Republican Presidential nomination on the sixth ballot at the Republican convention in Philadelphia last week, has resigned his $75,000 a year presidency of Commonwealth and Southern Corporation to devote all his time to the campaign.

When asked to comment on Senator Burton K. Wheeler's description of him as "an acknowledged Wall Street Lawyer and one who openly espoused the policy of American intervention in Europe's blood baths," Wilkie replied: "I never pay any attention to extravagant statements like these. If I'm a Wall Street Lawyer, Franklin D. Roosevelt's office is right across the street."

Wilkie's running mate, Senator Charles McNary, who has received the Republican Vice-Presidency nomination, has long been a proponent of legislation to assist the farmer. He is rated in the Senate as one of the deftest and least voluble of solons.

The war scene in Europe has again shifted, this time to the Balkan states. Russian troops have occupied the land ceded to them by Rumania and have crossed the borders agreed upon, thus bringing another territorial grab. Russia's advance has not been pleasing to Germany and has brought the promise that the Nazis "definitely will settle things later on."

A fleet of German bombing planes, supposedly purchased by Rumania, landed in the Transylvania province as neighboring Hungary prepared for war. Rich Transylvania, lost by Hungary to Rumania in the World War, has been Hungary's desire for a long time. Rumania has renounced the Allied pact with England and France, guaranteeing Rumanian territory in an attempt to gain protection by the Axis powers.

Germany claims the first foothold on British soil with the occupation of theChannel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey. The British however, claim that military defenses had been withdrawn from those points since they were of no particular advantage to the British plans.

Eleven persons were reported killed in Northeastern Scotland Monday night as German bombers raided England for the second time in 24 hours. British bombers reportedly struck at Germany and said they set storage tanks ablaze in Hamburg as well as bombing other military objectives.

The biggest order in the history of the U. S. Navy was placed Monday for 45 new warships, costing $500,000,000. Meanwhile the army promoted 1,350 regular officers and called the first of 9,000 reserve officers to active duty for intensive specialized training. Two new agencies set up by the Reconstruction Finance corporation arranged to buy 150,000 tons of rubber and 75,000 tons of tin for reserve stock.

Flood waters from the Colorado, Guadalupe and Lavaca rivers in Texas have left 10 dead, nine missing and property damage of about $5,000,000. Cloudbursts in Southwestern Arkansas brought more than six inches of rain in 12 hours, forcing residents of West Texarkana to evacuate their homes.

Philadelphia businessmen have estimated that visitors to the Republican National convention spent $12,000,000, ate 90,000 hot dogs, and drank 140,000 bottles of soda pop.

Lou Boedecker, state highway patrol chief, has asked for the wholehearted cooperation of every motorist in Western Montana and the entire state during this week's Fourth of July celebration in keeping highways of the state free from motor accidents.

Rapid cooling of milk encourages larger returns

Bozeman, July 2.- An essential step in the production of quality dairy products which will bring larger market returns to the farmer and which will encourage consumers to use more dairy foods, is rapid cooling of milk and cream, says Dr. J. A. Nelson, head of the dairy industry department at Montana State college,

With Montana's dairy industry cooperating in a nationwide advertising program designed to increase the use of cream and other dairy products, producers should be prepared to turn out a quality product that will put them in a position to benefit from this advertising.

The water-cooling tank not only lends itself best to the average Montana farm, but it has also been proven superior to air cooling for quickly reducing the temperature of fresh milk and cream.

Experimental tests comparing water with air for cooling milk and cream showed that unstirred milk exposed to cold air cooled from 98 to 86 degrees in 60 minutes. Milk setting in cold water cooled from 98 degrees to 58 degrees in 60 minutes.

Nearly every farm can arrange a satisfactory cooling tank with well or spring water. Cream from each separation should be cooled immediately and then added to the cream which has previously been cooled, Dr. Nelson said.

Noxious Weeds Are a Cause of Deep Concern

Because of the seriousness of the noxious weed problem in Lake County, a series of meetings are being called by the County Commissioners and the County Extension Agent, to discuss methods and means of fighting these pests.

Noxious weeds are spreading at an alarming rate and every farm in the cunty is being threatened. Unless these weeds are checked many of the best farms in the county will be abandoned within a few years.

The County Commissioners will be present at the meetings.
