The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. will begin work next week to improve the intersection of U.S. Highway 93 with Third Avenue and Old U.S. 93 in Ronan.

According a press release from MDT, this work is in response to public feedback regarding changes made to the intersection as part of the 2023 Ronan-North project. The opposite side of the intersection was widened last year, also in response to community concerns.

Bus drivers for the Ronan School District found it especially difficult to swing busses around the reconfigured corner onto Third, while larger trucks pulling trailers also found the intersection challenging to navigate.

“We thank everyone in the community who shared their feedback and concerns about navigating the intersection, especially for larger vehicles,” said Bob Vosen, MDT Missoula District administrator. “We are listening and want to make improvements that truly serve the community. Public input is essential to getting projects done right.”

Improvements include widening Third Avenue and Old U.S. 93 to enhance right-turn access from Hwy. 93. Work is expected to be completed this fall, depending on weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

According to the press release, drivers can expect traffic control measures to be in place, with reduced speed limits and possible single-lane closures on Hwy. 93. Third Avenue and Old U.S. 93 will remain open at the intersection with flaggers present to direct traffic.

Crews will be on-site Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m.- 6:30 p.m.

Culvert comments sought

MDT invites the public to comment on a proposal that would replace four culverts on Montana Highway 28 north of Hot Springs. The two Dry Fork Creek culverts are located about four miles north of town, and the two Camas B Irrigation Canal culverts are located about half a mile south of Lonepine.

Proposed work includes replacing the four structurally compromised culverts with new ones, rebuilding the roadway across the culverts, and upgrading pavement markings.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2026 depending on completion of design and availability of funds.
