Polson resident commended for heroic rescue

Police Police Chief George Simpson formally recognized Polson resident Ryan Hunter with a Letter of Commendation for his heroic actions during a life-threatening accident on Sept. 28, 2024. The letter was presented during the Polson City Commission meeting Monday.

Last September, a vehicle veered off Kerr Dam Road and plunged into the Flathead River. As Polson Police officers arrived on the scene, they saw headlights submerged beneath the surface and two individuals struggling in the water roughly 100 feet from shore.

Meanwhile, Hunter had witnessed the crash, dove into the river and, with the help of an officer, brought one of the victims safely to shore.

“Mr. Hunter’s actions that night were nothing short of heroic,” said Simpson during the presentation. “He demonstrated courage and humanity by entering the water to save a stranger. It’s acts like his that remind us of the extraordinary capacity for good within our community.”

Thanks to Hunter’s swift response, the victim was treated for minor injuries and made a full recovery. The second victim was also helped ashore by first responders.
