Polson Boxing Club member competes at Golden Gloves
Polson Boxing Club athlete Oziah HeavyRunner represented Montana at the Rocky Mountain Regional Golden Gloves Tournament, held in Salt Lake City.
During a fiercely competitive second round, HeavyRunner dislocated his right shoulder, halting his bout. After months of noninvasive treatment proved insufficient, he underwent successful surgery and has embarked on a six-month recovery.
HeavyRunner’s skill and sportsmanship earned him a prestigious $2,000 college scholarship from the Rocky Mountain Golden Gloves. The 18-year-old plans to enroll at Salish Kootenai College (SKC) this fall, pursuing academic and athletic goals.
“Oziah’s determination inspires us all,” said Tom Missett, assistant coach of the Polson Boxing Club. “This scholarship is a testament to his hard work and bright future.”
This achievement marks the second consecutive year a Polson Boxing Club member has received this Golden Gloves scholarship. In 2024, Charles Timson earned the award and has since transitioned to mixed martial arts (MMA) training with SBG Polson and is competing regionally.
These back-to-back honors highlight the club’s commitment to nurturing exceptional athletes, says Missett.
The Polson Boxing club operates from November to May at the VFW on Main Street in Polson. Serving athletes ages 12 and older, the club offers rigorous training at no cost, sustained entirely by community support. Connect with the club on Facebook.
