St. Ignatius Seniors: Slow down on salt intake
The recommended daily allowance for salt is 2300mg per day (one teaspoon). Salt does add flavor to food, but too much can lead to health issues; high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Cutting back lowers health risk and improves health.
What to substitute? Try squeezing lemon on roasted vegetables, using lemon zest in a mixture of spices for a meat rub or squeezing lemon in chicken noodle soup. Vinegar is another choice that brightens flavor and reduces the bitterness in vegetables. There are different vinegar types (apple cider and balsamic are good choices). Read food labels, especially processed foods, which are typically high in sodium.
