Commissioners and governor meet to discuss PL 280
It’s safe to say the future of Public Law 280 – the 60-year-old law enforcement agreement that’s given Lake County jurisdiction over most felonies committed by members of federally recognized tribes within its boundaries – is up in the air. However, Lake County Commissioners Gale Decker and Bill Barron and County Attorney James Lapotka met with Gov. Greg Gianforte Tuesday afternoon for to discuss the future of the agreement.

Shirley Rae Newton Eye, age 85, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at the Pines of Mission in St. Ignatius. Her Celebration of Life will be held on July 11 at the Mission Valley United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. A light meal will be available after the service, and then her body will be laid to rest at Pleasant View Cemetery in St. Ignatius.

There will be a celebration of her life July 6, 2024, at Valley View Clubhouse, 40765 Valley View Road, Polson, from noon-4 p.m. The reading of her complete obituary will be at 1 p.m.

Bill advances to enhance support for school infrastructure
House Bill 515, which hit the House floor April 4, calls for a one-time transfer of $75 million from the General Fund surplus to a special school facilities trust in order to elevate annual interest earnings.
Governor appoints local judicial advisory council
Gov. Greg Gianforte has appointed a 10-member advisory council to assist in reviewing candidates to fill the vacancy in Department 2 of the 20th Judicial District, which serves Lake and Sanders Counties.
