Helena update: Rep John Fleming
Hello from Helena. We have finished the first week after transmittal (exchanging bills with the Senate). The hearings in committees now are almost all for bills, which have had previous hearings in Senate committees, debate and two positive votes on the Senate floor. These bills have been vetted and are the survivors.

Bill advances to enhance support for school infrastructure
House Bill 515, which hit the House floor April 4, calls for a one-time transfer of $75 million from the General Fund surplus to a special school facilities trust in order to elevate annual interest earnings.
WEB EXTRA Helena update: Rep. John Fleming
Hello from Helena. My three committees (Education, Business and Labor and Agriculture) are hearing and acting on Senate bills daily. These are bills representing the ideas of senators across Montana and approved by the entire Senate. House floor sessions also consist of debate and votes on previously passed Senate bills.
Live History Days at Miracle of America Museum
On any given day, the exhibits in the Miracle of America Museum tell the history of America and its peoples. There’s a lot to see and learn.

How does your garden grow?
As snow begins to descend on the Mission Mountains and the air grows chill, those who love plants are saying good-bye ‘till next year or getting ready to keep them alive through the cold months. It doesn’t take a huge business operation to keep plants and vegetables alive all winter. It just takes some ingenuity and hard work.
Legislature prepared to tackle spending
It is hard to believe, but the legislative session is one third of the way toward completion. We are scheduled for 90 days.

Tight times quicken pace - County representatives seeing intense session
HELENA — Freshman District 12 Democrat Rep. John Fleming began his Wednesday last week with a 7 a.m. committee meeting. By the time he reached his desk on the House floor around noon, it was flooded with yellow. Scooping the constituent message flyers up, all, he said, that come from his district will get a response.
The silencing of democracy
Wednesday, April 26, 2023, was a sad day for Montana. The Montana House of Representatives voted along party lines to bar Representative Zooey Zephyr from the house chamber’s floor, anteroom, and gallery.
Word from Helena: 2,293 bills already in legislative hopper
One week into the 60th legislative session and I'm already swamped. Even before we were sworn in, the Senate Finance and the House Appropriations Committees met in a joint session. We review the revenue estimates and the governor's budget and make recommendations to the joint sub-committees.
Capitol letters
The pace of legislation is speeding up as bills clear committees and hit the floor.

Bikes for books
LAKE COUNTY - The Montana Masonic Foundation and Mission Valley Lodge No. 78 are pleased, once again, to participate with area schools in our "Bikes for Books" program to promote reading and public education. Public education has long been a focus for the Montana Masonic organizations and during the early days of Montana, it was common for the local Masonic Lodges to construct two story buildings with the Lodge meeting on the upper floor and the lower floor provided to the community for the school. A prime example is the historic Bannack Masonic Lodge/school house at Bannack State Park.
Taylor vote change was 'disingenuous'
Editor,
Dean Knutson is an asset to the community
Last week's open house at Country Foods brought to mind a number of stories we've written over the year about Country Foods' founder Dean Knutson. What a remarkable number of contributions he's made to the community since arriving here in the '70s to go to work at Rolfson's Building Supply and Contracting.

Country Store moves to new location
Snowflakes as big as quarters didn’t deter the Country Store crew on Saturday morning as they hauled boxes of household goods, toys and clothing racks to a waiting trailer. As soon as the racks were in the trailer, volunteers carried out armloads of clothes on hangers and re-hung them for the short trip to their new digs, around the corner at the former Odyssey Auto Glass building at 5 4th Ave. West in Polson.
A prayer always helps
When your teens are in high school, anything can happen. Our son was a student at Great Falls High School in the mid-seventies. On a beautiful warm Saturday he and a group of teens and their parents decided to picnic in the Little Belt mountains; after a delightful picnic lunch, a game of ‘steal the flag’ was begun and soon teens were running all over the timbered mountainside seeking to steal the other teams flag. The contest continued until it was time for everyone to head home. About the time everyone was loaded and ready to depart the picnic site; our son told us that he had lost his glasses during the excitement of chasing opponents through the timber. It was too late in the day to go looking for lost glasses. Later that evening, I asked a group of friends if they would pray that we would find the lost glasses the next morning so that we could be back in town before classes began at Great Falls High. They said that they would pray.
