AMHERSTVIEW, Ont. — Sister St. George, as she was known in her religious life, died peacefully at St. Joseph's Regional House in Amherstview, Ontario, on April 18, 2005, at 97 years of age of which 75 years were spent in religious life.

Kenneth Garald Smyth, long time missionary to Hong Kong and the Philippines, also known as Bro.Ken, Dad, and Grandpa, was born July 18, 1948 in St. Ignatius, to Lloyd and Lyla (Cote) Smyth. From the time he was very young, he always wanted to be a preacher. His home church minister, Bob Larsson, encouraged him in every way. One time Bob entered Ken in a “preacher Boy” contest. Ken was 13 when he won that contest. Many years later, Bob told him that he was the only entrant! In 2011, he spoke at the National Missionary Convention in Augusta, Georgia.

MVAS raises money after theft
POLSON — The Mission Valley Animal Shelter raised more than $3,800 at the Doggy Dash last weekend in Polson, but unfortunately, those donations will now go to off-set a break-in and robbery at the shelter’s thrift store, Seconds 2 Go, last Wednesday night.

Breaking records at Polson High School
POLSON — Cherry Valley Elementary students gathered Friday morning at the Polson High School Football Field in hopes of breaking two Guinness World Records titles: most people to run 100 meters in 24 hours and the longest chain of shoes. (They will be recycled into athletic surfaces.) The event was organized by the Polson High School Leadership Course to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage students to do something good for the environment.

It doesn’t take a huge business operation to keep plants and vegetables alive all winter. It just takes some ingenuity and hard work.

From the Mission Valley News, Feb. 7, 1979: Oh, the dances they had up Valley Creek! The Morins, Morigeaus, Hansens, and Whites had come as homesteaders. Their homes were scattered up Valley Creek. All week every member of the family worked hard, putting up buildings, tilling the virgin soil, fulfilling the requirements of the Homestead Act.

Livestock grazing renaissance emerging
Intensive grazing, also referred to as mob grazing, incorporates a simple strategy to reduce actual input costs while maximizing conservation values. What is intensive grazing? In the case of small or large scale ranches, it simply requires the strategy of moving your livestock, every 12 hours, into small confined pastures that have not been grazed up to 40 days. The pasture is never grazed below 9 inches of growth which encourages a quicker, thicker regrowth and a deeper, hardier root system. It also chokes out the weed seed germination cycle.

LIBBY - The Ronan-St. Ignatius girls' track and field team saw a long list of personal best marks Saturday at the Libby Invitational. Nine girls surpassed their old marks in both the running and jumping events.
