Pinewood Derby mixes fun and sportsmanship

“Among the best”: Ronan Chiefs claim fourth at State
The Ronan Chiefs capped off a trophy year at the 2025 State A Boys Basketball Tournament with a fourth-place finish, battling through the grueling three-day event at MetraPark’s First Interstate Arena and Lockwood High School Gym from March 13-15.
Irwin Donald Bangen, 92
Erwin Donald Bangen, 92, of Hot Springs, walked into Heaven on Christmas Day 2024, surrounded by family, pure as the driven snow. The service will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the Lonepine Hall (52 Lonepine Road, Lonepine) with graveside Military Funeral Honors following at the Lonepine Cemetery. Following the services, a dinner and a “short snort” will be provided by the family at the hall.

Patricia Sue Binger of Big Arm was born in Long Beach, Calif., on Oct. 1, 1944, to Margaret and Hiram Hovick. On Feb. 27, 2025, while surrounded by her loved ones, cancer defeated Pat’s body, but her soul is with Our Savior. A Celebration of Life will be held 9:30-11 a.m. May 10, 2025, at the Boy & Girls Club in Polson, with a short program at 10 a.m. Please wear fun attire – she wants it to be a party!!

Michael A. Taylor, retired rancher, cosmetologist, state senator and businessman of Rollins, passed away on May 27, 2025. A celebration of Michael’s life will take place at 11 a.m. June 28, 2025, at Polson First Presbyterian Church.

Gordon Gordy Raymond Anderson
Gordon “Gordy” Raymond Anderson, 86, of Polson passed away on Feb. 15, at his home surrounded by his family’s love, as he wanted. Gordy was born on April 16, 1926 in Great Falls to Henry and Anna Anderson. He began working at a very early age to help support the family before enlisting in the Navy. He was a WWII Veteran as well. He was an adventurous young man who enjoyed racing cars on dirt tracks, working with wood, and in his later years, painting as well. In 1947, Gordy married Rozella Fleming, until she passed in 1980. On September 4, 1981, he married his best friend and the love of his life, Yvonne Rose Anderson, and her wonderful children, who would know him also as “Dad.” Gordy started his own Auto Body Repair Shop in Polson (Anderson Body Shop) before going on to working in maintenance at St. Joseph’s Retirement Center, where he met Bill and Cindy McDonald, who became very great friends of the family. Gordy is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Anna Anderson, two brothers, four sisters, and his daughter, Patricia Mills. Survivors include the love of his life, Yvonne Anderson; his children Neil (Maggie) Anderson, Joe McQuire, Bud (Allie) McQuire, Frank (Carolyn) McQuire, Debbie Slack, Elaine (Mars) Scott, Carla Skiles, Fordyce (LaRese) Erickson, Tammie (Eric) Farley, Mike (Laurie) Erickson; and a daughter-in-law forever, Robin Erickson. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, and many, many great-grandchildren. The number of lifelong friends he will leave behind are countless, and the wonderful memory he leaves behind in this community is enormous. There will be a pot luck-style celebration of his life at the VFW in Polson on Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. Messages of condolences may be shared with the family online at www.groganfuneralhome.com.
Fur Harvesters hold spring rendezvous in Ronan
Mountain men dressed in furs, buckskins and capotes made from Hudson Bay blankets mingled with their modern-day counterparts, attired in fleeces and jeans, at the Fur Harvesters Spring Rendezvous, May 16-17 in Ronan.
Polson Chamber honors community champions
Women wore flamboyant hats and frisky dresses, while men took their best stab at Kentucky Derby apparel in the Polson Chamber of Commerce’s annual community banquet, held Feb. 21 at KwaTaqNuk Resort. The chamber celebrated the outstanding contributions of local businesses, volunteers and leaders while embracing a Kentucky Derby theme to recognize those “who go the extra mile for Polson.”
A-N-O-M-A-L-Y: Winners flummoxed by spelling bee outcome
The lone participant in last Thursday’s Lake County Spelling Bee who was not eligible for the state contest was also the only speller with a perfect record: Heidi Huber of Bigfork.
