Local artist reflects on a life of work, achievements
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, wildlife artist Dave Samuelson was enjoying a tour of the White House. He was invited to accept the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation Artist of the Year award and see his painting, Shadow Casting on the Blackfoot, added to the permanent collection that hangs in the Congressional building in Washington, D.C. The ceremony was scheduled to take place later that afternoon – but never happened. Dave and his wife, Trudy, soon found themselves struggling to find their hotel in the panic and smoke filled streets of D.C.

Canadian trick rider wows crowd at Polson rodeo
Big Tasty might sound like a mouth-watering hamburger, but he’s really one of Canadian champ Bella Da Costa’s trick riding horses. The big grey gelding was used as a pickup horse, but he didn’t like that work.

Trevor Jordan Atkin
Trevor Jordan Atkin was born September 15, 1985 to Steven L. Atkin and Penny L. Atkin at St. Ignatius. He died December 10, 2013 at the age of 28 in Frenchtown. Trevor was the last of four children born into the family, joining his older siblings, Seth, Ethan and Suzanne.

David Eveland Schilling, 78
David Eveland Schilling, 78, passed away July 7, 2020 at his home. Dave was born in Missoula, Montana on February 26, 1942 to Paul and Ellen (Eveland) Schilling. He attended St. Anthony and Roosevelt Grade School, and Missoula County High School, spending his final year and graduating at Los Alamos High School. He lived with his older brother Fritz after the untimely death of his parents. After graduation, he worked for Los Alamos National Laboratory for some time before returning to Missoula to attend the University of Montana while serving concurrently in the Montana National Guard.

Theodore Stoughton Stiles, 88, was born Jan. 6, 1936, at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Polson to parents Roy Frank Stiles and Lela Arline Stoughton Stiles. He passed away on April 6 at the Hot Springs Health and Rehab in Hot Springs.

William Hilton Sargent, Jr.
William Hilton Sargent, Jr., of Polson, Montana passed away peacefully on March 29th, 2016 in Yuba City, CA. Bill was born on May 2nd, 1932 in Huntington Park, CA, and spent his childhood in Southern California.

Tom Gillespie
Tom Gillespie, 86, died peacefully at home in Dallas, Ore., on Feb. 25, 2019, with his loving wife of 36 years by his side. He is survived by his wife, Carol; sister, Susie (Jay) Jewett; and children Karen (Dave), Diane, Sue (Kevin), Marie, T.J., Sheryl (Eric) and Jack (Lisa); as well as seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Daughter Marchita died shortly after birth.
