Harold Patrick Hughes passed away peacefully Feb. 21, 2025, in Polson, where he spent the final 45 years of his 85-year life. The Rosary will be recited on Sunday, March 2, at 6 p.m. at The Lake Funeral Home in Polson. The Funeral Mass will be on Monday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, burial will follow the mass at Lakeview Cemetery.

PHS principal promoted to superintendent July 1
Polson High School principal Andy Fors will be changing jobs July 1 when he steps into the role of superintendent of School District 23. Mike Cutler, who joined the district in 2021, is retiring at the end of the school year.

Polson Seniors: Nutrition funding could be at risk

Mission toppled Thompson Falls 53-51 for the District 7B Championship on Saturday, Feb. 22, in St. Ignatius. Cora Matt scored 15 points in the victory, crossing the 700-point career milestone mark.

Dwain Harrison Edwards, age 61, passed away peacefully on Feb. 12, 2025, at his home in Polson. He was born on Jan. 11, 1964, in Billings to Oshel and Bette Edwards.

Correction on Sunny White sentencing
Last week's story about the sentencing of Sunny White for the hit-and-run that claimed the life of Mika Westwolf on March 31, 2023, was incorrect: the sentence handed down by District Court Judge Molly Owen matched that recommended by Lake County Attorney James Lapotka and Assistant Attorney General Thorin Geist (the story stated that Owen had exceeded the sentence recommended by prosecutors by three years). Ted N. Winger passed away on Jan. 25, 2025, in Ronan at 91 years old. A lifelong talented artist, he was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1933, the son of Norman and Gayle Winger Sheneman, and older brother to Roy Winger and Debra Winger Miller.

Tax Increment Financing reform would deliver property tax relief

A Missoula woman is accused of dealing drugs in Lake County. Dorsette Hendrickx, 31, appeared in District Court in Polson Feb. 5 via Zoom and entered a plea of not guilty to one count of criminal distribution of dangerous drugs and two counts of possession with intent to distribute.

Gertrude Freshour, 98
Gertrude (Gertie) Mae Walker Freshour, 98 years old, passed away to her heavenly rest at home in Boise, Idaho, on Dec. 7, 2024. She was surrounded by her daughters and granddaughter. On Saturday, June 7, 2025, interment will take place at 1 p.m. at Pleasant View Cemetery next to her husband. A celebration of her life will follow at 2 p.m. at Ninepipes Lodge.

James (Jimmy) Raymond Jr., passed away on Dec. 18, 2024. A final celebration of life will take place 1-4 p.m. March 1, at Sander's County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Plains.

Donald Olsson Jr. of Ronan, a lifetime community leader and beloved husband and father, died on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025, at St. Luke Extended Care in Ronan, surrounded by family and friends. A Celebration of Life will occur at 11 a.m. on June 21 at Ronan Faith Lutheran Church, followed by a reception from 12:30-4 p.m. at The Knot at Sky Ridge Ranch in Ronan.

Our local legislators are in Helena debating the future of Montana’s Medicaid program. Montana Medicaid doesn’t only provide access to essential care to the thousands of Montanans on the program, it also ensures local access to care for all residents in the communities we serve.

Snowpack making gains, thanks to recent storms
The snowpack continued making gains during the first week of February across all of Montana as storms rolled across the region. As of Feb. 7, the mountain snowpack across most of Montana remained slightly below normal at around 80-90% of median, but there are exceptions.

The parking lot in front of the Joe McDonald Health and Education Center was packed on Saturday morning for the Love at First Sight Baby Fair. The event was the work of CSKT Early Childhood Services.

Better plant a bigger garden this year. Last week President Trump ordered the Army Corps of Engineers to release water from two reservoirs in northern and central California so he could proclaim that he “turned on the water” after the Los Angeles fires.

Woman accused of stealing from host
A Washington State woman is accused of stealing from a Pablo man who hosted her as a guest. Anna Marie Wheeler, 57, appeared via Zoom Jan. 29 and entered a plea of not guilty in District Court in Polson to felony theft.

Peter Daniels Jr., 91
Peter Daniels Jr. was born Jan. 10, 1934, in Detroit to Jean and Peter Daniels. He died Jan. 20 at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Polson.
